Fast food workers are in demand

STUDENTS who are not considering to study at the moment can consider getting a job. However, where ever you go, the employer will demand for working experience. If you don’t have working experience, you will find it very challenging to get a job.  

However, not all jobs will demand for working experience. There are jobs where training is provided.  Even if the salary is not up to expectations, you will get free practical training. One such job is in the fast food industry such as KFC, Mc Donalds, Pizza Hut, Sugar Bun, etc. Jobs in these fast food industry is always in demand. It is a good place to gain working experience. 

What do fast food workers do? 

They perform duties such as taking orders and serving food and beverages. They serve customers at counter or from a steam table. They may take payment. They may prepare food and beverages.

Often they are called by different job titles such as : Cafe Server, Cafeteria Server, Cafeteria Worker, Deli Worker (Delicatessen Worker), Food Server, Food Service Assistant, Food Service Worker, Prep Cook (Preparation Cook), School Cafeteria Cook, Server, etc. 

Daily Task
  1. They communicate with customers regarding orders, comments, and complaints
  2. Accept payment from customers, and make change as necessary.
  3. Scrub and polish counters, steam tables, and other equipment, and clean glasses, dishes, and fountain equipment..
  4. They perform cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, and washing dishes, to keep equipment and facilities sanitary.
  5. They balance receipts and payments in cash registers.


Knowledge required 

Although the job does not demand tertiary education, students who have completed SPM or STPM stand a good chance. In addition they are required to have some knowledge on:
  1. Customer and Personal Service - Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  2. Food Production - Knowledge of techniques and equipment for planting, growing, and harvesting food products (both plant and animal) for consumption, including storage/handling techniques.
  3. English Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  4. Public Safety and Security - Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  5. Sales and Marketing - Knowledge of principles and methods for showing, promoting, and selling products or services. This includes marketing strategy and tactics, product demonstration, sales techniques, and sales control systems.


Essential Skills

Since you are going to work with real customers, you must be prepared to work with people of all colour, skin, language, race and culture. The essential skills for fast food workers include:
  1. Active Listening - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
  2. Service Orientation - Actively looking for ways to help people.
  3. Speaking - Talking to others to convey information effectively.
  4. Social Perceptiveness — Being aware of others’ reactions and understanding why they react as they do. 


 

Work Activities 

Immediately after your training you will be a trainee worker under the supervision of other experienced workers. As you gain working experience, the job will expose you to the following activities:-
  1. Getting Information - Observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources.
  2. Performing for or Working Directly with the Public - Performing for people or dealing directly with the public. This includes serving customers in restaurants and stores, and receiving clients or guests.
  3. Communicating with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates - Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.
  4. Identifying Objects, Actions, and Events - Identifying information by categorizing, estimating, recognizing differences or similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events.
  5. Inspecting Equipment, Structures, or Material - Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.


How much can you earn?

The minimum working wage in Malaysia is now RM1,200. However, as a trainee you may be offered slightly less. After working in this field for two to three years, you should be earning more than RM2,000 per month including overtime. 

General

Since it is a retail outlet, people will be coming and going all the time. 

You will spend a lot of time standing on the job. 

Vacancies are often advertised. However, if you are ambitious, walk-in and talk to the Operation Managers in the outlet you prefer to wok.
