Kota Kinabalu: At least four Sabah women futsal players are set to receive a call from Football Association Malaysia (FAM) to attend national training, said national women futsal head coach Chiew Chun Yong.Chiew who is also FAM assistant technical director as well as Asian Football Confederation Futsal elite instructor disclosed the news on Friday during the Sabah leg of the National Futsal League which was held at the Juara Sports Arena Village in Putatan.

"Sabah women players have improved a lot and based on their performances in the first round league matches, at least four or five players made a very good impression and they will be called up for the first phase of training."

It will be the first time women players have been called up by the national body as they previously are only known for their prowess in football while Mohd Ridzwan Bakri is the only male player from the State called up by the national body.

Chiew also said the national women team have improved a lot in the past three-four years against the top teams in the region.

"We are not doing badly at the moment. We are not at the bottom but in the middle and obviously still with a lot to catch up against top teams such as Thailand, Japan and Iran."

"There are a lot of aspects that need to be improved such as physical, system play and the mental state of the players.

"In terms of individual skills, we are definitely far behind top players from Japan, Thailand or Iran but we are now able to compete with Indonesia and there are not much gap between us now."

He believed with a proper well planned development programme, Malaysia will be able to catch up to the top teams in the next five years.

"Development is definitely very important and at this moment we do have one which we hope to implement late this year or next year to develop young girls or even boys. And this we need to work closely with the state Football Association."

He also praised Sabah Football Association for hosting the circuit.

"This is the first time Sabah FA Futsal committee took the initiative to host the national tournament.

"We find that the venue is very awesome and I believe this is one of the best organised circuit and the set up is very good."
