Ranau: Rural Development Minister Datuk Radin Malleh has called on women in the rural areas to master at least one skill to supplement the household income. He said housewives especially need to be involved in the field of commerce and build a sense of self-leadership to fend for their families and community as a whole.

"The government will always provide the courses and training so more women in the rural areas can become entrepreneurs," he said on Thursday.

Radin said this during the closing of the Community Service Programme – basic sewing and intermediate course for the Karanaan area, here, which was organised by his ministry.

About 30 women took part in the two-month course.

All the participants of the course were also provided with a sewing machine to start up a business, sponsored by Karanaan Assemblyman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.

They also received a sewing course certificate.

The course is one of the many efforts of the State government to eliminate the dependency on government aid.

Radin pointed out the role of women these days was no longer confined to being a housewife and managing the homefront alone, but also to be successful businesswomen and leaders.

He noted that a number of women have risen as figures to look up to in a wide range of industries ranging from textiles, cosmetics and real-estate.

He also urged course participants to remain positive about comments made by customers on the quality of their work.

Comments could be a start for more opportunities like an expansion into various productions in sewing, curtain-making, headscarf, beads, embroidery, handicraft and more, he said.

"We can always start small and from the house as a start. No need to charge too high when getting orders from relatives, friends or neighbours.

"We have to change the perceptions of the community that sewing is not limited to clothes but also various other activities," he said.
