Putatan: More corporate bodies and other private companies are urged to step up and forge smart partnership with the Sabah Amateur Body Building Association (SBBA).In making the call, State Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan said he believed, with close collaboration from all parties, the sport will once again able to flourish like in the olden days.

"I am glad that tonight we see the fruits of this collaboration between the association and corporate bodies and I commend the association for successfully convincing the private sector to become co-organiser of the Mr Sabah Bodybuilding Championship this year," he said.

Tawfiq's speech was read by Youth and Sports Assistant Minister Datuk Masiung Banah.

He added that the ministry applauded the commitment of private companies in helping SBBA to lift and support the development of the sport in the State.

At the same time, he said, the organisation of Mr Sabah Championship in Putatan district will provide the exposure needed for the local community especially bodybuilding enthusiasts to have closer look at their idols.

"It is my hope that this championship will trigger greater interest in the sport among the people in Putatan and that more will take up the sport in the future," he said.

The championship is used to select potential hulksters to be roped into the Sabah squad for the Mr Malaysia Championship, which will happen from June 5 to 8 in Labuan.

Tawfiq urged winners who would represent Sabah to the national championship will give their best so that Sabah will once again one of the main powerhouse when it comes to the sports.

"I also hope that SBBA will continue to work hard in improving our athletes' qualities. The State government through my ministry will continue to provide all the support and provision needed in carrying out the association's activities, but especially those activities that are geared towards the development of our athletes," he said.

More than 70 participants took part in the one-day event which was held at the Soluxe Hotel in Putatan.

Riano Engah, 39, was the eventual winner of the Champion of the Champions' title. He will be joined by seven other champions, each in their own category, to carry Sabah's flag to the Mr Malaysia Championship next month.
