Harvest Festival is rich with positive values: Siringan
Ranau: Pesta Kaamatan (Harvest Festival) is rich with positive values that must be adopted by the younger generation to enable them to face the modern world with strong will and resilience.State Resource Development and Information Technology Minister Datuk Siringan Gubat said one of the characteristics of the festival relates closely with interpersonal as well as physical beauty.

"What usually takes place during Kaamatan is the Unduk Ngadau competition which in its essence represents a deeper meaning which should give a valuable lesson to our younger people today.

"The Unduk Ngadau competition actually teaches us to be strong, matured, smart and beautiful not only in terms of the physical appearance but also in our character, thoughts and communication," he said.

Apart from that, he said the festival must also become a turning point for every KDM individual to be better in their lives, while continuing to struggle to make lives better for their families as well as the surrounding communities.

Siringan was speaking when officiating the Kg Lasing Ranau Harvest Festival Celebration 2015 that was held at the village's community hall on Saturday.

Meanwhile, he said the Harvest Festival is a platform where traditional values must be revisited in order to preserve unity, peace and harmony within the multicultural society in the country today.

Siringan, who is also Paginatan Assemblyman, said it is important for people in this day and age to be patriotic while at the same time do not lose their respect for others from different cultural background.

"While we maintain our love to our people, our culture and our religions, we also have to understand the feelings of other people, and respect for other religions without being influenced by elements that can distort and undermine the unity of mind and security of the nation.

"So in line with the theme of this year's Pesta Kaamatan celebration, let us bring back the old spirit of brotherhood among the people regardless of our background, but stay strong to our own heritage," he said.

Also present were Sabah State Legislative Assembly Secretary Datuk Bernard Dalinting, Paginatan Community Development Leader (PPM) Georgina George Leong and other local leaders.
