Kota Kinabalu: City Hall has demolished the sole bin centre at Jalan Gudon in Kampung Dambai, as part of its plan to put an end to the misuse of the facility in that part of Menggatal.City Hall incurred losses of more than RM4,500 after several plastic communal bins there had melted beyond use after they were burned by unknown individual on April 15.

The culprit could not be identified until this day. Daily Express reported a fire accurring near another bin at the site in information provided by a reader weeks later.

A City Hall spokesman, when contacted recently, said it noticed all sorts of junk such as excess building renovation and industrial wastes were dumped into the communal bins.

"The massive weight of the surplus waste was not only damaging the bins but making it impossible for us to empty them. Besides, we couldn't transfer them into our compactor because it was meant only for domestic waste.

"We also encountered a large pile of chicken remains, not to mention all its feathers that were scattered in that area, some of which ended up inside the nearby roadside drain," he said.

He said the site where the bin centre was located had since become a regular landfill for many irresponsible parties.

"The situation had gotten out of hand as more and more non-domestic waste were piling up in that area when we were there to clear the contents of the bins," he added.

Previously, he said the bin centre was meant to serve the villagers who reside along that stretch of road.

"But now the situation is different. Irresponsible parties from outside that village are also taking advantage by throwing all kinds of junk there," he added.

Asked as to where the villagers supposed to throw their rubbish now that the bin centre had been demolished, he said it had placed one communal bin at a section of the roadside behind that spot.

"We can't just close that area without providing other alternatives," he said, adding that apart from emptying the bin on the daily basis, it will also go house-to-house to collect their rubbish.

He advised every homeowner residing along that stretch to place a bin in front of their respective home.

The spokesman was responding to a query by a villager there who was at a loss as to where to discard their rubbish in view of the closure of the bin centre which they had been using for umpteen years.
