Kota Kinabalu: The West Coast Taxi Operators Association has submitted a memorandum to oppose the proposed rezoning of taxi routes which will limit members to ply within city limits from next year. Its President Wong Nyuk Ming on Tuesday said the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) move, if implemented, will reduce the income of taxi drivers who are already facing stiff competition among each other.

"There are already over 1,000 taxi drivers in the West Coast area alone and setting our routes will greatly reduce our income," he told the Daily Express, here.

"They (CVLB) are expected to go for a meeting and are likely to reduce all taxi routes," he said.

Wong said as part of the process, the taxi permit of cabbies has already been reduced from five to one year from this year.

Most cabbies can ferry passengers as far as Kota Belud or to Papar from the city and they have been dependent on the distance to earn an income for many years.

"We are against the plan. The government is at present implementing more plans which create more issues instead of facilitating the people. "If the move is implemented, how can we survive then?" he asked.

CVLB had been silent over various issues related to public service vehicles in the past and also did not comment over the 43 per cent hike in taxi fares for cabbies in the peninsula, ahead of the Goods and Services Tax implementation on April 1.
