Tawau: High demand for the People Housing Project (PPR) had caused difficulties for the District Council to determine the eligibility of the applicants.Tawau District Council (MPT) President Datuk Ismail Mayakob said the council received between 6,000 and 7,000 applications for the 500 PPR units in the district.

However, he assured that the council adheres to the strictest criterions when deciding which applicants are really eligible for the houses and confirmed that in the past, he had terminated several lease agreements after it was found that the tenants were in fact ineligible to rent the houses.

"There were several where the agreements were cancelled when we found concrete evidence such as payment receipts that proved their ineligibility.

"Meanwhile, for those who are eligible, they are allowed to stay put but they also have to verify their status which must be in accordance with the rental agreement," he said after chairing a meeting with other council members, here, Monday.

Ismail said in order to terminate the rental agreement, strong and enough evidence is needed as required by the law. He, however, did not reveal the number of tenants whose eligibility was revoked.

Earlier, councillor Liew Kiam Ming suggested that the rentals of PPR be reviewed after the tenants have stayed there between five and ten years except for the hardcore poor who really need the houses.

He said this is because there are those who keep staying in the PPR houses even after their socio-economy status had improved.

In another development, Liew urged the Marine Department to stop dry-docking activities by ship owners and their crew in Ba Zhong beach.

He said ship owners must find another place to dry-dock since the Ba Zhong area is unsuitable for such activity and if it continues, Liew is worried it would invite other unhealthy activity to be carried out by irresponsible people there.

"When we went to visit the area, we interviewed several crew members who told us that they would continue on their way once they are done and other ships will go in.

"They said they could not find another place to clean their ships and they 'chose' the Ba Zhong area to do it," he said.
