Sandakan: The newly formed Sandakan Tourism Association (Stan) will be organising its first event dubbed 'Colours of Sandakan' in June.President of Stan, Johnny Lim, said the event will be held from June 11-14 in conjunction with the Sandakan Festival.

He said, the event which Stan hopes will become a yearly event, will showcase most things that are of Sandakan.

"During the four-day event at the Harbour Mall Piazza, visitors can expect to be enchanted by cooking demonstrations, entertained by Sandakan dances and to be able to purchase special tour package offers from local Sandakan tour operators.

"The event will also include handicraft making demonstrations and even Silat performances," he said in a statement.

"This is our very first event since we formed the association early this year. All Stan members have joined hands and worked hard towards ensuring this becoming successful event.

"I ask that the public come and give us their support by visiting the Harbour Mall Piazza during those four days," he added.

Meanwhile, in order to create more awareness and garner support for the event, Lim led his Exco members to pay courtesy visits to all the elected representatives of Sandakan.

Among them were Batu Sapi Member of Parliament, Datuk Linda Tsen, Elopura Assemblyman, Datuk Au Kam Wah, Sandakan Member of Parliament, Stephen Wong and Karamunting Assemblyman, Charles O Pang.

During the visits, Tsen extended her congratulations to the formation of Stan and assured the association of her full support.

She also asked that Stan keep on working towards promoting Sandakan as a premier tourism destination within Sabah.

Au said he was impressed by Stan's ability to organise a sizable event within such short a time since its formation.

He also shared with Stan some tourism ideas which he had including the introduction of a Sandakan tourism map which features tourism spots, restaurants, hotels and other facilities such as inter-state bus stations, banks and many more during the visit.

Lim said Sandakan had a lot to offer as a world class tourism destination with destinations such as the renowned Sepilok, easy access to Turtle Island parks and just two hours' drive away from fantastic wildlife and bird watching destination of the lower Kinabatangan River but only needs more awareness of these destinations.

Four Points by Sheraton Hotel General Manager, Kanit Sangmookda, who is also a member of Stan said he found Sandakan an interesting destination with a huge potential to grow, adding the friendly locals were also big plus.

He was glad that Sandakan tourism operators have come together to form an association in working towards the promotion of Sandakan.

"In the cities that I have worked in, as long as (the) tourism players worked together, the tourism industry of that city does well. So I can see Sandakan going towards that positive direction."

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun is expected to officiate at the opening of the event on June 11.
