Ranau: Kundasang Assemblyman, Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the District Hospital should be equipped with more specialist doctors since it is situated at the centre of the main route connecting the North, East, South and West of the State."We realise what the current situation is, but this is what our hope is, it is that the level of medical services in the district be drastically improved in order to give more health benefits to the people.

"To my knowledge specialist doctors are scarce in the country today, what more in Sabah. There are not many specialists who are working with the Health Ministry.

"The handful of specialist doctors that we have today are placed in referral hospitals like those in Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Tawau and Keningau, as chronically ill patients are referred to those hospitals.

"We understand that there are specialist who come to Ranau Hospital as visiting doctors according to the appointed dates and time. So at the moment, we have to bear with this reality," he said.

Joachim who is also Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing also urged the people across the district to be patient when dealing with personnel at the Ranau Hospital.

"Yes, certain quarters may have their own disappointment with services rendered in certain health centres, but we need to remember that hospital staff are giving their best to our people.

"It's our people who are being attended to, and it's our people who are attending. Especially the nurses and medical assistants," he said when speaking to the media here recently.

Joachim said, the people need to be thankful that there are doctors placed in the Health Clinics in Kundasang, Timbua, Bundu Tuhan and Kaingaran.

"Although it is understood that only in Kundasang and Timbua where Medical Officers are currently present, as others have quit or went for further studies.

"So our hope is to see more doctors arrive at our district in the future," he said.
