Young lawyers reminded to practise ethics

Kota Kinabalu: Young lawyers were on Thursday reminded to practise the ethics of an advocate once admitted to the Sabah Bar and apply themselves diligently to make the Sabah Bar proud of them.High Court Judge Stephen Chung said as an advocate, lawyers have the honour and duty of handling the responsibility of an officer of the court."Your responsibility does not stop upon your admission this morning. ADVERTISEMENT "As an advocate you must remain and continue to be a deep and proper person, not only as an officer of the court but also in your daily life, so that you do not bring ridicule, embarrassment or scandal to this respected profession," said Chung in addressing the court after granting the applications of 19 young lawyers to be enrolled to the Sabah Bar, here.Four Deputy Public Prosecutors (DPP) were among the 19 who were admitted as advocates of the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak.They were DPP Luke Ressa Balang, Effizah Ernie Idris, Dominic Chew Ban Huat and Aida Jaafar Mad Ariff.The other young lawyers were Shim Sheen Ying, Lester Yong Hoi Uei, Melanie Tan Mei Yang, Vivian Thien Shin Ying, Magdalene Soon Yi Lian, Liyana Shazzwanie Ismail, Joel Joannes Solidau, Mohd Azhier Farhan Arisin, Liang Yrenn Kwong, Elina Ezzaudin Hussein, Hershan @ Ray Herman, Marshalle Shirleen Tan Tsun Tzi, Lindsay Michael Godtol, Liliah Tubing and Liew Fui Thong.ADVERTISEMENT No objection was raised by the Sabah Law Association's (SLA) Immediate Past President Datuk John Sikayun, who appeared for SLA and Senior State Counsel Nor Asiah Mohd Yusof on behalf of the State Attorney-General's Chambers.Chung, in addressing them, said further: "As you have attended and passed the ethics course, you should continuously remind yourself of the ethics as an advocate. Put the good terms into practice.

"Treat your fellow advocates especially the senior advocates with due respect and take note of the decorum in court and hopefully there would be no personal attack and remarks in court proceedings against each other," he said."You should apply yourself diligently to make the Sabah Bar proud of you. I hope you gain and learn experience and improve yourself to be good advocates in the near future," said Chung in congratulating them. Balang, Effizah, Chew and Aida are no strangers to the Sabah judiciary as they have been serving as Deputy Public Prosecutor in the Federal Attorney-General's Chambers in Sabah for years and prosecuted notable criminal cases in the State.Balang, 31, who hails from Sibu, Sarawak, joined the Federal Attorney-General's Chambers, Putrajaya on July 1, 2008 as a DPP after being awarded a Bachelor of Law with Honours from Universiti Teknologi Mara in in the same year.He was then transferred to the Attorney-General's Chambers in Kota Kinabalu and has remained in service since.Effizah, 32, of Beaufort joined the Federal Attorney-General's Chambers, Putrajaya on Jan 31, 2008 as an assistant Public Prosecutor after she was conferred a Bachelor of Law (Hons) at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).She was posted to the Attorney-General's Chambers, Kota Kinabalu on Feb 6, 2009 and later confirmed as DPP on Sept 16, 2009. She was transferred to the Prosecution Unit of the Pejabat Penasihat Undang-Undang Melaka on April 1 this year until today.Chew, 30, who has a Master of Laws (LL.M) in Legal Aspects of Medical Practice from the University of Cardiff, was offered to join the Federal Attorney-General's Chambers on Feb 4, 2010 as a DPP.He was then posted to the Sandakan Branch of the Prosecution Unit at the Attorney-General's Chambers, Sabah before he was posted to the Attorney- General's Chambers, Kota Kinabalu, on November 20, 2014 and has remained in service till now.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

Aida, 32, who read law at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), joined the Federal Attorney-General's Chambers, Putrajaya as an Assistant Public Prosecutor on Aug 14, 2008 after she was conferred with a Bachelor of Legal Studies (Hons) on Aug 9, 2008.On Aug 15, 2008, she was posted to the Attorney-General's Chambers, Kota Kinabalu and was confirmed as a Deputy Public Prosecutor on May 10, 2010 and has since served as DPP.
