Kota Kinabalu: KThey have conquered the 4,095m Mt Kinabalu, the highest mountain in South East Asia, trekked the deep forest of Maliau Basin Conservation Area or Sabah's 'Lost World' and most recently explored the Tabin Wildlife Reserve at Lahad Datu.Interestingly, members of this outdoor-loving group are not promising young athletes but senior officers and staff of the Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam Negeri Sabah (JPAN), who are mostly 40 years of age.

Led by its Director, Datuk Nordin Siman, the group's endurance activities started last year following the launching of the 'Fit JPAN' or 'Kecergasan JPAN'.

This year Maksak Malaysia collaborated with Persatuan Telehealth Malaysia to organise a fitness programme – Walk-a-Win – for the Public Service which was officiated by the Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa, last March.

The 'Walk-a-Win' main objective is to encourage physical activities thus encouraging healthy lifestyles among members of Malaysia's Public Service.

The programme is also aimed at transforming Malaysia's image from being labelled as the "most obese" country in Asia.

'Fit JPAN' went a step further by encouraging its officers and staff to participate in outdoor activities such as mountain and hill climbing, jungle trekking, while maintaining its regular fitness activities.

JPAN is a member of the Sabah Environmental Educational Network (Seen), a non-governmental organisation (NGO). JPAN is helping one of Seen's objectives such as creating public awareness and environmental education.

During the visit to the Tabin Wildlife Reserve, the largest protected wildlife are in Sabah, the 'Fit JPAN' group, led by Nordin and involved 46 JPAN officers and staff, toured the rhino captive breeding centre and the Orang Utan post release monitoring centre.

The group also had a glimpse of some of the rare mammals inhabiting the Tabin Wildlife Reserve, such as porcupine, flying lemur, palm civet and leopard cat during night safari.

The Permanent Secretary to the State Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Ginun Yangus, and Lahad Datu District Officer Iman Ali also joined the two-day adventure trip.

Nordin said, the programme is aimed at developing mental and physical fitness, as well as inculcating awareness on the importance of preserving natural environment among its officers and staff.

"It (Fit JPAN) has brought about positive impact on JPAN officers and staff, especially in terms of working attitude and healthy lifestyle.

"In line with the theme of this year's Workers Day – Healthy Workers and High Productivity – we hope to organise more fitness activities, including field trips which can bring health benefit to our officers and staff," he said.
