'State should foot bridge's facelift'

Papar: Local residents here want Member of Parliament Datuk Rosnah Rashid Shirlin to reconsider the need for a facelift to the concrete bridge near Kg.Buang Sayang here.Umno Papar Divisional Chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Ismail said Rosnah, who is also Works Deputy Minister, is in the best position to pursue the matter which is the aspiration of the people here.

"A number of residents here have voiced out that they want the bridge to be given a facelift due to its historical background where it was part of the North Borneo Railway built heading to the township here in 1915.

"I think Rosnah should look into this as this could be her legacy and be remembered by the people here," he said to Daily Express here, on Tuesday.

Rahim, who is also Pantai Manis Assemblyman, was commenting on an article on Tuesday quoting Rosnah as saying there is no need to upgrade the said concrete bridge as the district Public Works Department's assessment revealed that it is still sturdy and able to accommodate the daily load of vehicles using it. Rosnah was also reported as saying that the bridge was still in good condition since it has been fully refurbished with a new structure that is more durable in 1995.

Meanwhile, Rosnah told Daily Express that she fully supports a proposal to give a facelift to the concrete bridge.

"As a Papar MP, I totally agree and support that the concrete bridge should be given a facelift. But considering that the bridge is built on State road, the proposal should be forwarded to the State Government.

"In regard to my recent statement, I was addressing specific questions posed by the reporter on the safety and maintenance of the bridge based on the assessment of the district PWD here," she said.
