Kota Kinabalu: The closure of the Tuaran Road created a massive traffic jam and inconvenience to thousands of motorists during the recent Kaamatan holidays. Inanam Assemblyman, Dr Roland Chia criticised the authorities and contractors for choosing the whole Kaamatan holidays to close the road.

"So many people were travelling back to their kampong for the extended Kaamatan public holidays but many ended up getting stuck in a long traffic jam due to the insensitivity of the authorities and contractors," he said.

"The road closure for whatever reasons is insensitive to the motorists who used the road for work, business and daily activities.

"These hours of road closure are uncalled for. In developed countries, road closure for construction and maintenance work is done during late hours of the night and the early hours of dawn," he said.

Chia said he had received many calls from commuters to the business community and distressed parents who had to spend hours on the road to send and pick up their children for the last day of school.

Chia urged the authorities to be more sensitive to the needs and cries of the people.

The Public Works Department in newspaper advertisements announced that Jalan Lintas/Jalan Tuaran Mile 5½ was being closed from 8am on May 29 until 5am on May 31.

The closure was to facilitate concreting deck slab works for the widening of existing bridge and all road users travelling to the city, Inanam, Lintas from Tuaran on those three days were advised to use nearby Lorong Keleto or Jalan Selingkir.
