UTM planning branch in Sandakan

Kota Kinabalu: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) is mulling over setting up a new branch in Sabah, says Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Wahid Omar.He said the new branch would be put up in Sandakan as it was the state's education hub.However, he hoped the Sabah Government would be able to channel funds to develop the campus, including the infrastructure.

Wahid was speaking after the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MoA) ceremony between UTM and Takasago Thermal Engeneering (TTE) Co Ltd here.The MoA was witnessed by Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun who represented Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.Meanwhile, Masidi, on behalf of the state government welcomed the UTM plan to set up the branch.He wants Sabah's three main sectors such as manufacturing, agriculture and tourism to be among the courses offered at the proposed branch.

The MoA will see UTM receiving RM3 million from TTE for five years to establish a new research lab that would strengthen education and research activities at the Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) through the 'I-Kohza' system.'I-Kohza' is a Japanese-based education which integrates a Japanese mentorship style of teaching with the innovative infusion involving Japanese and Malaysian values.
