Kota Kinabalu: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman called on property developers to include quake-proof features in their development plans in view of the 5-9 magnitude earthquake last week. "I wish to remind property developers to work closely with experts, including from agencies and research institutions, to ensure that buildings are strong and resilient against the impact of earthquakes.

"This is a responsibility that cannot be shouldered by the government alone. We need cooperation from all stakeholders, if we are to guarantee that homes, offices and other buildings are safe," he said during the opening of Bay 21 Condominium, here.

His speech was read by Deputy Chief Minister cum Industrial Development Minister Datuk Raymond Tan.

Several geologists had recently expressed concerns in the event earthquakes occur again, with some reports calling for better building codes to ensure there would be minimal damage.

Last week's earthquake claimed the lives of 18 climbers in Kundasang, as well as damaged many properties, costing millions of ringgit to repair.

Musa, however, noted the State's property sector will remain vibrant and will be one of the key drivers of the local economy.

"It is an important part of growth and is central to the financial health of related sectors such as the transporters, products, specialists, contractors and others.

"The most important part of this chain, however, remains the property buyers," he said.

Towards this end, he said good property developers would know the best products to churn out, in terms of materials or design, to give a good value to their prospective purchasers.

"Such design could include features to allow buyers to save on power and water bills," said Musa, adding that property developers also need to build more quality affordable homes, so more Sabahans can own houses.

Musa also took time to commend Bay 21's developer Remajaya Sdn Bhd Managing Director Datuk Chua Soon Ping for the launching of his condominium.

He lauded Chua for his Bay 21 project leading the way in environmentally-conscious construction and being the first Green Real Estate silver rated recipient.
