Mt Kinabalu SAR team launched

Ranau: The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department has formed a mountain search and rescue (Mosar) team, based at Ranau Fire Station as a measure to prepare for natural disasters or other emergencies.Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan, in launching the team Monday, said the team members responsible for emergency management and assessing safety aspects on Mount Kinabalu were selected from among experienced and skilful mountain guides. "For a start, we have appointed 20 mountain guides as auxiliary fire officers and the number is expected increase to 100 members.

"The selection process was first implemented last Friday and those successful will be called for a 10-day basic training programme borne by the government," he said. He said with the Mosar team comprising mountain guides, an emergency situation could be handled within a shorter response time thus improving search and rescue efforts.He said the tasks and work schedule would be planned in detail to ensure members were available along the Mount Kinabalu trail and at rest houses in case of any eventuality. "The members will be equipped with appropriate personal protective gears (PPG) as well as rescue equipment such as 'stretchers', harnesses with lifelines and other tools necessary for search and rescue," he added.

Meanwhile, Abdul Rahman said Sabah Fire and Rescue Department would acquire two more helicopters to assist in the department's search, rescue and disaster response efforts.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
