900kg of rubbish collected at resort in Mataking

Semporna: Nearly 900kg of rubbish were collected at The Reef Dive Resort, Mataking Island during the 9th Annual Reef Day participated by 215 participants, recently.However, the 880.95kg or 167 bags collected were less than those collected during last year's event.According to a statement, the drop was an encouragement to the management to continue with their efforts in creating more awareness on the environment.ADVERTISEMENT This year, the event themed "Love the Ocean; Save the coral" was participated by students from SMK Tawau, SMK Panglima Abdullah, General Operation Force (PGA), Army, WWF, Reef Check Malaysia, Kalapuan community and Mataking staff.Semporna Deputy District Chief, ASP Fadzhil Mohd Ali and his team were also present.The event saw a number of activities being held such as garbage collection competition, challenging games, awareness talk, coral planting, underwater clean-up and dance performances by the Kalapuan community.The students and Kalapuan community were also given awareness talk by WWF and Reef Check Malaysia before the start of the beach clean-up.ADVERTISEMENT Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

The resort also provides 'coral planting' activity for divers, including 32 guests from Kids Scuba led by Syed Abdul Rahman of Kuala Lumpur. The event ended at 4pm with the presentation of souvenirs, certificates of appreciation and performances by the Kalapuan.
