Sabah Museum to celebrate golden jubilee next month
Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Museum will be celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year with a range of activities starting from July 1.The activities for the golden jubilee range from Crafts Exotica (July 1-26), launching of the G.C. Woolley Diaries (July 15), First Day Cover (July 15), Museum Golden Jubilee Historical Walkathon (July 25), Museum Golden Jubilee Celebrations (July 27), Museum Seminar (July 28-30), Museum Hari Raya Open House (July 30), Women in History exhibition (Aug 28 to Dec 28) and Borneo Beads Festival (Oct 7-11).

According to Sabah Museum Director Joanna Kitingan, the objective of the celebration was to share with the public the museum's story and what it has been doing behind the scenes.

"The exhibition will show the works behind such as archaeology activities and how we acquire our materials from the communities.

"What the people see is only the exhibition gallery which is only about 10 per cent of what our collection is. We can't exhibit everything but usually every May 18 we have an open day but we will also have it within this period so the public can see how the museum works. The exact date will be confirmed but tentatively it will be on the May 15."

Joanna said this during a press conference on the Museum's Golden Jubilee celebrations here, Thursday.

She said to start off the celebrations, the Crafts Exotica programme will be held at the Museum's Kg Warisan area and its objective is to promote understanding and awareness on traditional culture via local handicrafts and games by ethnic groups in the State.

The next event is the launching of the G.C. Woolley diaries which offers an interesting insight into life in early British North Borneo and the launching of the Sabah Museum Golden Jubilee First Day Cover stamps on July 15.

On July 25, there will be a Golden Jubilee Museum 4km walkathon from 7am to 11am at the Museum where 1,000 participants of all ages are targeted and entry is free with lucky draws.

The event is expected to be flagged off by Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry Permanent Secretary Ginun Yangus.

July 27 will see the official launching of the Museum Golden Jubilee celebrations by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman.

On July 28-30, a Museum Seminar will be organised in conjunction with Universiti Malaysia Sabah with the theme "The Museum and Sabah Heritage - Past Present and Future" which will expose the public to the museum's role and function.

On July 30, a Museum Hari Raya open house will be held from 8am to 4pm at the Museum's Kg Warisan Phase 1 area with activities such as traditional sports, choir, Brunei gambus performance, treasure hunt and colouring/drawing contests for primary pupils.

On Aug 28, there will be a special exhibition entitled "Women in History" at the Museum on the roles played by women in the State throughout its history.

And lastly on Oct 7-11, there will be a Borneo Beads festival which will showcase beads and their different functions to be organised in conjunction with the participation of museums from throughout Borneo.

In addition to the above activities, Joanna also said there will also be a "Family History Make the Nation History" photo completion where the public will be encouraged to submit (lend or donate) their old pictures of their families and interesting history and stories behind them.

"The idea originally came from Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Sri Masidi Manjun to bring up more family histories to light especially through photos.

"We make it a competition so we will be able to judge the quality of the photographs and the stories behind them. So we want to invite the public to come and share with us what they have in their family albums and stories that contribute to the nation's history. Once the Minister launches it (hopefully in early July), then we will have more details on the matter and forms."

"The final details of this competition programme will be announced in July," she said. Also present was Museum Curator and head of Museum Corporate Services Stella Moo.
