Kota Kinabalu: Beginning this year, the Federation of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS) has adopted a new policy in serving the Chinese community throughout the State. Its President, Datuk T.C. Goh said as a State organisation, the FCAS Executive Committee is obligated to go down to the ground to meet the people in an effort to identify problems and needs of the Chinese community.

"So far, we have visited Keningau, Lahad Datu and Sandakan. We will visit other districts as well based on our schedule," he said at the FCAS Night held at the Sabah Hakka Building, here.

Goh reiterated that the Federation acts as a "bridge" between the Government and the Chinese community.

The Federation's Honorary Life President, Datuk Tay Jin Jwo graced the occasion.

The dinner gathering was to welcome some 300 delegates for the Annual General Meeting of FCAS which was held on the next day (Sunday). Goh was elected unopposed as the President of FCAS.

On behalf of FCAS, Goh presented donations of RM10,000 and RM8,000 to SJK © Pai Wen, Ranau and the Kinabalu Mountain Guides Association respectively. On hand to receive the cheques were the Headmistress Ng Li King @ Goh and Alicesion Leong who represented the school's Board of Governors, and Association Chairman Richard Soibi.

According to Ng, there is an urgent need to build temporary classrooms as some of the existing classrooms were damaged by the earthquake on June 5.

"Prior to the incident, we had only one school session for six classes from Primary One to Six. Currently, we are forced to conduct two sessions, morning session for Primary One to Three, and afternoon session for Primary Four to Six owing to lack of classrooms," she explained.

Richard also expressed his gratitude to FCAS, saying he did not expect non-governmental organisations (NGOs) throughout Sabah to be so concerned and caring for the wellbeing of the people in Ranau.
