Kota Kinabalu: A moderate El Nino can be expected by September, according to the State Meteorological Department Monday. Its Director Abdul Malek Tussin said this was based on the sea surface temperature observation over the east-central Pacific Ocean, as well as most international climate models' prediction. He was commenting on the current heat wave and the high-level of UV ray penetration that could be detected through smartphones, which he attributed to the Southwest Monsoon.ADVERTISEMENT But he dismissed any links between the current conditions to the recent earthquake that hit Ranau on June 5.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

"Sabah is currently facing the Southwest Monsoon which will continue until September," said Abdul Malek."During this period, relatively less rain is expected. The current hot and dry weather conditions are mainly due to clear sky and lack of rain for the past one week, except for parts of Sandakan and Tawau divisions," he said. On the extent of rainfall reduction, Abdul Malek said: "A weak El Nino phenomenon has a minimal impact towards the amount of rainfall in Sabah. Nevertheless reduction of monthly rainfall by 20 - 40 per cent is expected."
