Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Sino KDM Association (SSKA) encouraged all Sino KDMs in the State to become members so that it will be easier for the association to help them with their problems. Its President Datuk Johnny Goh said the Sino KDM community is unique because they are both here and there when it comes to whether they are Chinese or natives.

"However, this uniqueness also could get us into a lot of legal problems. One of the major problems is when we want to transfer our NT lands to our children, especially when they do not have Native Certificates.

"For us to do that, we have to go to the National Registration Department (NRD), go through all the bureaucracy, a lot of problems.

"Even worse, when on our death certificates, we were recorded as Chinese. Imagine the hassles our children would have to go through when claiming their inheritance especially NT lands," he said.

Goh said this when speaking at the SSKA Membership Drive and opening of ASB accounts for members at the Gaya Sports Club here.

However, he added, the association could make lives easier for members by helping them to go through all the processes.

"All we want is for you to join the association. We don't want money. We just want to help. We need more members so that when we demand for our rights, we have the backing of all our members.

"There is strength in numbers and this association will make our community stronger. You need us, we need you to strengthen us," he said.

About 30 SSKA members managed to open their ASB accounts although not all of them have Native Certificate which would prove their bumiputera status. They only had to produce their birth certificates to show that at least one of their parents is a native.

Goh also announced that the association is going to organise its annual Sino Day on Nov 14 and this year's highlight will be the Sino Beauty Pageant.

"For this event, all contestants will don traditional Sino KDM costume, a blend of KDM costume and traditional Chinese costume. "Of course, these costumes will be fully sponsored by the association. We want to showcase the uniqueness of our culture to the public and this is one of the ways we want to go about it," he said.

The association has a lot of things planned such as the production of its own documentary and publishing of its own bulletin which would be distributed to all members Statewide.

"Through this bulletin, we can communicate to our members on what we plan to do and also to update on any new development that would benefit the whole community," he said.
