Rafflesia find boon for Tenom
Tenom: The tourism industry in the district received a boost with the discovery of four clumps of Rafflesia in the foothills of Sungai Kg Ulu Naluyan, about two kilometres from the Tenom-Keningau main road. The finding was also confirmed by Agricultural Officer Osman Marzuki and his assistant Jain Linton who went to visit the site on Monday.

"We ask for cooperation from all parties to help protect this precious heritage, especially because these only flowers grow in cool and unpolluted surrounding. We do not mean to stop land development around this area but we hope that its cool surrounding remains intact," he said.

The area where the flowers were found is situated just next to the Sabah Rubber Industry Board (LIGS) project which is currently actively planting rubber trees.

One of the tourism industry players in the area Gerald Baxter who expressed his delight at the finding said it is a great opportunity for the industry in the area to attract more tourists to visit the Interior especially Tenom.

Baxter who owns a piece of land near the Tampasak waterfall said he planned to convert the area into a rainforest-themed recreational park by maintaining the forests in their original state as much as possible.
