Labuan: In reactivating Gerakan branches on the island, Gerakan President Datuk Mah Siew Keong advised party members that working hard alone is not good enough if it cannot be translated into votes for the Barisan Nasional."Throughout the country we have been working very hard for the people, yet we lost badly in the last general election," he said.

Mah was one of the casualties in the national polls until he reclaimed Teluk Intan with a slim 238-vote majority in a by-election forced by the death of the incumbent last year.

Mah, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister's Department and on his first visit to Labuan, was breaking fast with members as well as Labuan MP Datuk Rozman Isli and Labuan Chinese Chamber of Commerce.

He praised Rozman for listening to the views of the people and together working with passion to propel Labuan to greater heights.

Labuan had doubled its population from 50,000 to 100,000 within a span of 20 years, while its Gross Domestic Product had leapt from RM2.8 billion to RM4 billion in a space of four years.

Under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP), the Prime Minister had outlined programmes to transform the socio-economic landscape by 2020.

"The BN has a strategy to double the income of the Bottom 40 per cent (B40). Five more years to go and there are doubts whether this is achievable. However, this cannot be realised if there is too much politicking," Mah said, urging members to give feedback on the weaknesses of the national coalition.

He hoped the revived party branches would secure a bigger win for the BN in Labuan in the 14th general election.
