8 cases of child kidnapping recorded

Kuala Lumpur: Eight cases of child kidnapping were recorded between 2012 and June this year, the Senate was told Thursday.Home deputy minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said of the number, three were recorded in 2012, two in 2013 and 2014, and one this year."Six victims were rescued, one was found drowned and one was murdered," he said in reply to Senator Noriah Mahat.

He said parents' negligence, by leaving their children without supervision was among the factors for the incidents.The main factor, as Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) investigations revealed, was ransom, he said."Kidnapping is a complex issue as the crime is not only committed for ransom but other motives such as revenge and unpaid debts; preventing it requires the involvement of all parties," he said.Wan Junaidi said the ministry with the cooperation of PDRM had embarked on an intelligence to keep tabs on potential kidnappers or syndicates.

He said the ministry had also enhanced its cooperation with the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry by introducing the 'Nur Kasih' hotline, through which the public could relay any relevant information. – BernamaThe deputy minister also said a safety guideline programme, through animation and cartoons in television commercials had also been introduced for children.
