Hajiji pledges cooperation in fake Native Certs probe
Kota Kinabalu: The State Local Government and Housing Ministry will extend its full cooperation to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in the ongoing investigation into the alleged issuance of doubtful Native Certificates. Its Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor said the ministry as well as the Native Affairs Department and the Native Court would give their full cooperation to the MACC in the investigation.

He said the issue was a complex one and had become the talk of many Sabahans.

"They (the people of Sabah) feel many wrong things had been done until these had affected the privileges of the natives, especially in matters involving land and others," he said.

The holder of a Native Certificate holds special privileges such as acquisition of land, opening of an ASB account and also entering into higher public learning institutions.

But instances of abuse had caused the issuance of the Native Certificates to be frozen on April 22, 1982.

Till June 26, 37 individuals had been hauled up and questioned by the MACC over their doubtful Native Certificates.

Eight of the individuals were from the city, two in Tawau, five in Lahad Datu and three in Sandakan, aged 47 and above, while it is learnt that more arrests will be made soon.

On June 27, MACC froze 14 Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB) accounts, with savings worth a total RM7 million, suspected to have been opened using fake Native Certificates.

The MACC will also be making arrangements to transfer the ownership of land totalling 2,000 hectares that had been acquired using fake Native Certificates to the State Government next week, according to source close to the MACC.

Due to abuse, the National Registration Department had also stopped accepting applications to rectify the status of race based on the Verification Letter for Sino-Native and others issued by the Sabah Native Affairs Office.
