Kuala Lumpur: The young Malaysian waterskiers, Aaliyah Yoong Hanifah, 11, and her nine-year-old brother, Aiden, are ready for the IWWF U21 Waterski World Championships after going through a three-day training at the venue. The championships being held at Sesena Lake near Madrid, Spain starts Friday until Sunday.

This will be Aaliyah's fourth world championship appearance, with her first in Dubna, Russia in 2011 when she was eight years old, while Aiden is making his debut in the competition.

The Malaysian Waterski and Wakeboard Federation (MWWF) in a statement Friday stated that Aaliyah would take part for the first time in the women's slalom and also in the jump.

In the past three world championships, she only took part in the tricks events.

Meanwhile, Aiden will be competing in the men's tricks event.

"We do not expect Aaliyah to make it to the finals in slalom and tricks except that she wants to try and achieve good results in these two disciplines to be near her personal best, while gaining experience in a new lake and against the best in the world.

"Similarly also for Aiden in men tricks and we hope he will soak in this high level competition and keep his nerves," said their father cum coach Hanifah Yoong.

"Aaliyah's objective in women tricks will be to try to finish in the top 10 in the world for Under-21 skiers and get into the finals and I feel this is within her capability," he added. – Bernama
