Tawau: People in Pulau Sebatik can start using the Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM) jetty with immediate effect. The matter was disclosed during the visit by Kalabakan Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Panglima Abdul Ghapur Salleh, Sebatik Assemblyman Datuk Abdul Muis Picho as well as several government agencies and departments senior officers at the jetty, Friday.

According to Ghapur, he will have to make an application to the Custom Department and District Munincipal Council in order for the people to use the facility prepared by the government.

"The people here complained to me that the rental payment for the jetty was expensive causing them not to gain any profits in their sales.

"Why can't they just use the facility prepared by the government as it is free?" he said.

He said that he was in doubt when the people were not allow to unload their goods at the LKIM jetty and had to use the private jetty instead which most of them could not afford.

"I cannot let this issue to persist because some had said that there was corruption involved … why can't the officers allow them to unload their goods at the jetty instead of the private jetty?

"I want to know from the Forestry Department and District Municipal Council who had given the approval for the private jetty to be built," he said.

He then urged Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) and police to monitor the situation at the jetty for 24 hours as its locality would make it easier for irresponsible people to intrude.

He also hoped that the decision to allow Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM) to investigate the matter would not be questioned by any parties.

He said this was because the people were told to unload their goods from Batu-Batu Sabindo to Log Pond and were not allowed to use the LKIM jetty (which they were allowed to) due to the absence of approval.

"In this case, where does the approval comes from? Is it from the sky?" he said, adding that he will be sending letters to the authorities requesting for approval.

It was understood that the issue had been going on since 2011.
