Strong winds wreak more havoc in Sabah, Labuan
style="text-transform: uppercase;">Kota Kinabalu: Strong winds continued to wreak havoc in Sabah and Labuan, blowing off rooftops, damaging houses as well as public buildings and uprooting trees. In Kiulu, the roofs of several houses in Pukak and Sinansag as well as the entire Dewan Pukak (community hall) were blown off.

Assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who spent the whole Sunday visiting the affected areas, said he was now waiting for a detail report on damages from the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) chairmen for further action by the District Disaster Relief Committee and Welfare Department.

"As an immediate action, I will provide assistance to repair roofs of houses that were damaged," he said, adding that Kiulu had been without electricity supply since 11am on Saturday after a huge tree fell onto the power cable near SMK Tun Fuad Stephens. Power has yet to be restored as at 8pm while clearing works of the fallen trees began at 1pm on Sunday.

"I have also requested the Kiulu Community Development Leader Unit (UPPM) office to get all the JKKKs in Kiulu to submit detail reports of damages caused by the strong wind last Friday the latest by tomorrow (Monday)," he said.

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government continued its momentum in managing the economy in line with the commitment and spirit of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) when it posted record high state revenue of RM6.973 billion last year.
Meanwhile, strong winds believed to be the backlash of the Tropical Storm Linfa also blew off the roof of the only school building block of Sekolah Menengah Advent Tamparuli also known by its acrynom SASS (its former name was Sabah Adventist Secondary School).

No injury was reported in the incident and none of several cars parked on the either sides of the building was damaged.

About 300 worshippers were still inside the Seventh-day Adventist Pioneer Memorial Church located about 300 meters away from the damaged building.

In LABUAN, at least 23 houses were damaged with rooftop blown off by strong winds since Saturday till early Sunday.

Seven of the houses were in Kg Bebuloh, Sungai Bedaun (two), Sg Miri (two), Sungai Lada (two) and one house each at Kg Layangan, Pohon Batu, Lubok Temiang, Rancha-Rancha, Sungai Keling, Kg Pantai, Kerupang, Kilan, Patau-Patau and Sungai Bangat.

However, no casualty was reported.

Labuan Parliamentary Constituency Community Service Office chief Basran Yunus said immediate assistance would be channelled to the victims.

"We have received reports on the number of affected houses in 14 villages. We have also ascertained suitable assistance for them, including materials to repair their houses, which will be channelled immediately," he said.

He said other agencies which were also providing aid to the victims were Labuan Corporation, Social Welfare Department, National Security Council and Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP).

Meanwhile, 30 Ramadan bazaar stalls at Labuan Walk, were also damaged by strong winds early Sunday. Also affected were several stalls in other bazaars at the bus and taxi terminal of Labuan Sentral Market and Kg Layang-Layangan.

The intermittent strong winds with heavy rain which started Saturday morning and associated with the tropical storm (Linfa) that hit Luzon, Philippines, are forecasted to persist until Wednesday.

A check found the structures of two stalls perched on a tree after being blown off by the strong winds.

"A strong wind suddenly hit the bazaar. We could only watch in shock what was happening. Despite the scary situation, I was still able to help rearrange the stall canopies that had been blown off," said Roslan S. who witnessed the incident.

"The wind blew off more than 20 canopies. Fortunately when the incident occurred, the traders had already gone home," said Roslan who works at the Blue Wave Lounge, near the Labuan Walk bazaar. A parked vehicle at the Financial Park Complex was also damaged in the incident after debris from the building fell onto the vehicle.

Meanwhile, Labuan Fire and Rescue Department also received a number of emergency calls since Saturday concerning fallen and uprooted trees along the street in several villages of Kg Lajau, Kg Pantai and Batu Arang.
