'Rhino' hurt; nephew dead

Kota Kinabalu: State footballer Mohd Rozaimi Abd Rahman was seriously hurt while his nephew succumbed to injuries when the Honda Civic they were travelling in crashed at Km 3.5 along Jalan Tuaran, Monday. Mohd Rozaimi, 23, of Tanjung Aru, was a passenger in the vehicle driven by Ak Mohd Farris Mahamud, 21, from Likas, his nephew, also a former Rhino player.Mohd Farris who was warded at the Intensive Care Unit of Queen Elizabeth Hospital died at 8.37pm while Rozaimi who regained consciousness was transferred to the KPJ Sabah Hospital. Chandra said preliminary investigations showed the duo were heading towards the city centre from Inanam when the driver lost control of the vehicle which crashed into a tree, a telephone pole and a house fence at about 1pm. A total of 12 personnel from the Kota Kinabalu Fire and Rescue Department led by its Operations Chief John Bernard took about 12 minutes to rescue the duo who were trapped in the wreckage. They were rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 2 for serious head and leg injuries.Football fans across the State were shocked after photos of the accident went viral via Facebook and WhatsApp moments after it occurred on Monday. ADVERTISEMENT Md Rozaimi, started his career as a Malaysian footballer in 2010 and is currently playing for Sabah FA as a striker after previously playing for Sarawak FA and Selangor FA. He also plays for Harimau Muda A and plays midfield in the national football team. He is a Malaysian international and made his debut for the country against Sri Lanka in 2012.

Meanwhile, Rozaimi is out of danger and in a stable condition according to his father, Abdul Rahman Latip. "He had few stitches on the head and a dislocated left shoulder but doctors told me he is stable," he said.Rozaimi's wife, Nurul Adila Junaidi, said: "He Whatsapp-ed me at around 1pm and just after my class ended, a friend sent me a text message stating that he (Rozaimi) was involved in a car accident."I at first did not believe it and tried to call him but couldn't reach his mobile."I then received a call from another friend that he was admitted to QE2 when I was on my way back home from college," said the 19-year-old Polytechnic undergraduate.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.
