Sandakan: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) is determined to find the real reason some community leaders in the East Coast, particularly village chiefs and Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) chairmen, do not alert them of the presence of illegal immigrants in their respective areas. Esscom Intelligence Deputy Director ACP Hashim Justin said this is an important step to ensure security and a smooth implementation of integrated operation to eradicate illegal immigrant issues in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone).

He said Esscom has conducted numerous meetings with the Esszone community, including to brief village chiefs and JKKK of their roles and responsibility to report the presence of illegal immigrants in their areas.

"However, our integrated operations find that there are still many foreigners being rounded up for not having valid documents and the premises where these illegal immigrants are detained are located not far from the houses of the village chiefs and JKKK chairmen," he added.

He said Esscom must find the real reason which caused this to happen again and again.

He said this during a safety briefing held in conjunction with the breaking of fast and handing over of assistance by the Rural Development Corporation to those in need in the Sukau area.

The event which was held at the Sandakan mosque was officiated by Sukau Assemblyman Datuk Saddi Abdul Rahman here, Sunday.

Hashim said overall involvement, including from village chiefs and the JKKKs is very important to ensure there are no illegal immigrants in Esszone.

"Esscom is faced with threats from outside and inside our country. We must win or address these threats from within, especially to eradicate illegal immigrants who act as informers to cross border criminals," he said.

On that note, Hashim again urged the government to make it compulsory for every village chief and JKKK in the Esszone to prepare a population composition profile, including to have the exact number of illegal immigrants in their villages.

He also hoped relevant State ministries will appoint village chiefs and JKKK to ensure none among them protect illegal immigrants as part of garnering profit for their self-interest.

"We should not put the country's sovereignty at stake. Village chiefs and JKKKs should know who are the new faces or foreigners in their villages," he said, adding there are some who receive money from illegal immigrants as payment for allowing them to build squatter settlements in their villages.
