Oil and gas training centre in UMS plan
Kota Kinabalu: A million-ringgit oil and gas simulation facility to train roughnecks is currently being constructed at Universiti Malaysia Sabah. This comes amid the university's move to establish its own Oil and Gas Training and Certification Centre, here.

The construction of the facility is made possible through an industry-university partnership said to have cost around USD4.5 million (RM17.15 million).

It is the result of a venture between a new company set up by UMS, UMS Oil and Gas Sdn Bhd and Site Group International Limited.

The facility will include a 'safe live process plant' and a realistic industrial oil and gas facility to provide a controlled environment for new and experienced trainees to develop their practical skills and boost their competency.

Its construction is expected to take about nine months.

The centre is scheduled to offer internationally accredited and employer customised vocational training and competence assurance programmes to the oil and gas Industry in Sabah by the final quarter of this year.

According to Deputy Chief Minister cum Industrial Development Minister Datuk Raymond Tan, the training will be akin to working from the live platform.

"This will be the first one in Sabah," said Tan, referring to the facility.

"This is how we (the government) look at the (oil and gas) industry, hopefully such training will prepare Sabahans to be able to take up good positions in the industry," he added.
