Call to work together to develop basketball

Kota Kinabalu: Chairman of Everise Ventures Sdn Bhd Datuk Yap Pak Leong who is the sponsor of the 7th STC Cup Kota Kinabalu Basketball League 2015 tournament has urged basketball associations and corporate sectors to work together with the Sports Ministry to develop the sport in the country. Yap, a former State Minister , who is the guest of honour in his speech in the opening ceremony held at the Kota Kinabalu community hall on Sunday said Sabah as well as the country will be doing the correct thing to promote and develop the sport.

"Basketball is an important sports and much loved game in many countries. It has been in the Olympics Games since 1976 as well as in Commonwealth Games and other international sporting events.

He added that basketball in the United States has developed into a big industry in entertainment, advertisement and manufacturing of sports equipment.

"Top basketball player in the United States are paid a salary in the region of US$25 million per year and another US$30 million for personal appearances and advertisements. It is even greater than boxing, tennis, golf and soccer and at the same time it also promote health and ethnic harmony .

"Therefore, the State and Malaysia as a whole will be doing the correct thing to promote and develop basketball which can be played outdoor as well as indoor all year round.

"Let us propose to both our Federal and State Ministry in charge of sports to convert part of our indoor sports complexes in Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Keningau and Tawau and other major towns into basketball courts with spectators seatings , and provide funds to promote multi-ethnic games through more league tournaments.

"Basketball associations and corporate world need to work together to support our ministries to develop the sport so that every body can enjoy the great game of basketball."
