Rebuild Antanom fort as history destination
Tenom: Rural Development Minister Datuk Radin Malleh urged the State Museum to rebuild the Antanom Salangit-Rundum fort as a local history destination. He said the Salangit-Rundum incident in 1915 is historical to Sabah and therefore important for the public to be aware about it, especially the younger generations.

Radin said this when representing Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan during the commemoration of the 100th Salangit-Rundum incident at Dewan Seri Antanom that was attended by about 2,000 people, here, Saturday.

Therefore, he said there must be a continuous effort to widen historical information among the people through celebrations.

"I'm sure this can remind us of the people's fight led by their warrior Antanom. I was not aware of the history until I learnt about it when I was in secondary three.

"According to history, Antanom stood up because he wanted to defend the land and the people's rights, especially the payment of tax in the interior by the colonisers," he explained.

Earlier, Persatuan Tujuh Jurusan Keturunan Pahlawan Ontoros@Antanom (Pusaka) Chairman Sinawat@ Welly Antakah explained the Salangit-Rundum incident about a century ago was divided into three phases.

He said the first 48 years was a difficult time for the people as they witnessed the rise of Antanom resulting in the deaths of 900 innocent people.

"Most of them died in a war against the British and others due to leprosy or 'Upa' in Murut because the fort built by Antanom was filled with faeces and corpses. This is one of the reasons for Antanom's fall," he said.

Pusaka, according to him, was formed and registered under the Registrar of Societies (RoS) in 2012 and consisted of 600 members who are the descendants of Antanom.

"Today marks our 100 years of losing Aki Antanom…and there are more of our descendants who we have not found," he said, adding that the purpose of Pusaka is to unite all the descendants of Antanom.
