Kota Kinabalu: The MCA leadership's decision to appoint deputy president Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong to be Sabah MCA liaison body chief is the right move, said MCA Luyang Assemblyman, Hiew King Cheu.Hiew believed the party leadership had the facts and reasons in arriving at the decision, which was for the progress of the party in Sabah.

He said that the MCA state chief has an important role to improve and promote the party as well as Barisan Nasional as a whole.

"These all boils down to actively serving the people, and talk is not enough. We must get ourselves well organised and be united to show the people what we are capable of," he said here Monday.

Hiew said it was not advisable for some quarters who were not too happy about the appointment made by the party leadership to issue statements and make comment in the local newspapers.

"The ultimate goal on the decision is to unite the leaders in Sabah and it is essential to have someone like Wee who has the calibre and experience to bring Sabah MCA to a higher level.

"This will enable MCA to get a strong grip of the hearts of the people. To do that, we shall need all the leaders and members to go to the ground to positively serve the people," he said.

Hiew said having Wee as the Sabah MCA chief would also help Sabah in the long run because of he would have direct links to the central administration.

"This is what we should be looking forward to," he said.

It was reported recently that Wee would replace Senator Wilfred Yong as the Sabah MCA chief following a reorganisation of MCA. According to a brief statement, Yong would be given another significant role at the Federal level.

However, the abrupt replacement had been described as a backward move by party sources claiming that the problem stemmed from the practice of having the State MCA chief appointed by the party president instead of going through an election process.

Towards this end, the sources said the post of the state chairman should be elected in order to prevent a recurrence. Other MCA Sabah leaders openly criticised MCA President Datuk Liow Tiong Lai for making the appointment without proper discussion.

Kapitan Chee En Kong had said that a representative from Sabah MCA should be called to sit and discuss the appointment rather than make a quick decision on the matter.
