MCMC blocks access to 310 online gambling sites since Jan

Putra Jaya: The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has blocked access to 301 illegal gambling websites over the first six months this year. Deputy Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari said it was part of the 940 applications to block access to online gambling submitted by the relevant authorities, including the police, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK), as well as the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim).

"The ministry and the MCMC will not keep quiet, but will act by censoring and blocking online gambling or any other inappropriate websites to combat the online gambling activity which had raised public concern," he told reporters after launching the new Mutiara Teknologi (M) Sdn Bhd's office in Bandar Baru Bangi, near here, Monday.

He said this in response to the disclosure of the latest tactic used by illegal gambling operators who made online gambling offers to the public via text messages (SMS) following the recent massive operation done on gaming houses and cyber cafes.

Jailani said the MCMC had also blocked access to 325 online gambling websites from 538 applications made by the police, KPDNKK and Jakim last year.

However, he said the MCMC could only help combating the activity from the technical aspect, such as blocking the access, while further action would be under the jurisdiction of the police and KPDNKK.

Earlier in his speech, Jailani praised the commitment showed by Mutiara Teknologi (M) Sdn Bhd for having improved the effectiveness of MERS 999 operations ever since it was appointed by TM Malaysia in 2007 to merge emergency numbers in the country into one set of standard and reachable number, 999. – Bernama

Since its inception, MERS 999 had managed to improve the level of preparedness and response time of the rescue teams, such as police and fire department, as each distress call would be answered and addressed accordingly by the professional emergency officer within 10 seconds, he added. - Bernama
