Kota Kinabalu: City police have smashed a housebreaking gang known as 'Gang Kaidal' following the arrest of a foreign labourer and a driver of a pirate taxi here this month.City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said a 27-year-old Filipino labourer with no document, who is believed to be the mastermind, was nabbed inside a mini bus at the Wawasan Plaza bus terminal at 7pm on July 22.

"The labourer was the main suspect known as 'Kaidal' who was also previously convicted for housebreaking and trespassing offences. He was also working as a construction labourer near Sabah Foundation.

"Following his arrest, a 25-year-old second suspect who worked as a pirate taxi driver was apprehended at a roadside near 1Borneo Hypermall at about 11am on July 23. He has no previous conviction records.

"Our initial investigation showed that the second suspect was recruited by the mastermind to be the transporter in the series of housebreaking cases here this year," he said in a press conference here on Tuesday.

Chandra said both were tracked down when a 55-year-old woman bank officer lodged a police report that her house at Luyang Perdana was broken into between 8am and 2pm when she was at work.

He said she lost her jewellery, five branded wristwatches, some cash and identification documents all worth RM50,000.

With the arrest of these two suspects, Chandra said they believed four other house breaking cases in Luyang and Inanam where items worth RM55,000 were stolen between March 1 and July 2, this year, were also resolved.

Further investigation, he said, led them to various items worth RM65,000 including jewellery and branded wristwatches at several pawnshops here that were believed stolen items from the five housebreaking cases.

"We have also seized a Perodua Viva believed used by the second suspect as a transporter in committing the crime.

"Apart from that, we also detained three men working in those pawnshops to facilitate police investigation," he said.

He advised pawnshop owners and operators to be extra cautious when accepting items sold by people as they could face action for buying and keeping stolen items.
