Selangor: Some 2,799 retrenched Malaysia Airlines (MAS) employees have registered with the Corporate Development Centre (CDC). Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot said the CDC had trained staff to guide and support the employees retrenched under the MAS Recovery Plan."Of those registered, 81 per cent chose new jobs while 18 per cent opted for self-employment," he told a press conference after visiting the CDC, here, Tuesday.

The CDC, which began operation on June 1, organised career fairs in June and July where 60 local and international companies offered job opportunities. It was set up by Khazanah Nasional Berhad to retrain, create jobs and relocate the retrenched MAS employees.

The MAS Recovery Plan approved by the Cabinet on August 27, 1014 is expected to help MAS achieve profitability within three years after listing by 2017. On another note, Riot said 11,023 employees of 278 companies had been retrenched for various reasons in the first six months of this year.

"A study on human resources has found that individuals change careers three times during their life time. As such, the retrenchment of more than 10,000 employees is normal if viewed from a different perspective." Meanwhile, CDC chief executive officer Shahryn Azmi said their focus was on the retrenched MAS employees.

"We want to provide them with better jobs because most of them have the expertise and extensive experience.

About 50 per cent of the 2,799 registered are from the maintenance and engineering division."

He said the local and international companies which offered them jobs included those in the aviation, hospitality and engineering sectors. – Bernama
