Dogs to aid Forestry Dept

Sandakan: The Sabah Forestry Department has set up an armed team and a tracker canine unit (K9) in its effort to enforce the State's Forest Enactment and Rules.The armed team comprises 40 personnel equipped with pistols and guns, while the K9 unit is handled by two personnel assisted by a German Sherpherd and a Belgian Malinois.Its Director Datuk Sam Mannan said the team and unit were needed to combat crimes such as poaching, illegal logging and encroachment of forest reserves by undocumented foreigners.

On the armed team, he said the personnel have a standard operating procedure to follow on the proper handling and management of the weapons.Mannan said for a start, the K9 unit would focus on tracking gaharu (sandalwood) smugglers in forest reserve areas that have been identified as hotspots for gaharu theft.
