Tawau: Persatuan Bumiputera Bajau Semporna Sabah (Perbubas) has challenged Umno Vice President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal to leave the party and join a local-based party in Sabah to champion the people's rights, needs and interests especially the Bajau community in the East Coast of Sabah. Its President Mansor Santiri said it is best for Shafie, who was dropped from the Federal Cabinet by the Prime Minister, to make such move as his contributions and hard work to strengthen Umno at the grassroots level here were not being appreciated.

"Shafie is a Bajau leader from the East Coast of Sabah and it has been the hope and aspiration of the Bajau community and Perbubas to stand by him (Shafie) and give solid support if he decides to leave Umno.

"Furthermore 60 per cent of the grassroots here are no more supporting Umno following various political scandals that have been highlighted nowadays," he claimed Wednesday.

Mansor claimed that Shafie has failed in Semporna but he (Mansor) did not deny Shafie's contributions to defend the rural communities.

For example in Semporna, he said the channel of solar power and water supply in Bum-Bum Island as well as developing human capital development such as establishing educational institutions like Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) and Community College.

But he also cited Shafie's failure to build a bridge from Bum-Bum Island to the mainland, build a dual carriageway main road in Semporna and address infrastructure streetlight and water issues in the district.

Mansor said Shafie must be bold to fight if he truly wished to champion the people's struggles especially the Bajau community in Sabah.
