Kota Kinabalu: Outgoing Deputy Education Minister I Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching said she has accepted the new portfolio of Deputy Minister of Higher Education with an open heart and mind. She will be in charge of universities, polytechnic schools and community colleges in the country.

"The appointment is a progressive move as I am put in the realm of higher education now. Presently, the focus of the Ministry of Education is on technical vocational education and training (TVET), among other aspects.

"The portfolio is appropriate as TVET is also my passion," she said when contacted in Kuala Lumpur.

Yap, who is also Member of Parliament for Tawau, is particularly happy that she can contribute further to technical and vocational education and training (TVET), given her experience in this area while serving as Super Principal of SM Teknik Tawau (SMTT).

She said TVET helps learners to acquire the right skills and knowledge that are needed to enter the complex world of work.

"I take the opportunity to thank each and everyone in the Ministry of Education, especially the Secretary-General, Tan Sri Datuk Dr Madinah Mohamad and Director-General, Dato' Seri Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof, for the great cooperation and support rendered to me during my tenure as the Deputy Minister of Education I. "I wish the Ministry of Education continuing success and look forward to any form of future educational collaboration between the Ministry and Ministry of Higher Education. We are soaring upwards," she said.

Yap, however, quipped that she would miss the schools, students and teachers.

SM Teknik Tawau (SMTT) was a failing school before 1996. Its remarkable turnaround, beginning in 1998, came about after Yap was appointed Principal of the school in 1996.

In 2006, SMTT became the first school in Malaysia to be in the Cluster of Excellent Schools under the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP).

During her tenure, the school scored 100pc passes (Technical Stream) in the SPM examination for 10 consecutive years (1998-2007) until her retirement in 2007 after a 32-year education service.
