National honours for Inanam's Yick Nam

Kuala Lumpur: Two Primary Five pupils of SJK (C) Yick Nam, Inanam have done Sabah proud in the AEIOU Challenge on Financial Literacy.They are Candy Voo, 11, who emerged as the national champion, and her classmate Ann Veatcey who was third-placed. Both received their cash prizes and hampers from Deputy Education Minister I, Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching at the prize presentation ceremony held at SJK (C) Sentul, here, Tuesday.

She said the duo and another finalist from Sabah were among 40 pupils from all over the country who vied for honours in the finals.That was the last official function graced by her prior to assuming her role as Deputy Minister for Higher Education.Yap, who is Member of Parliament for Tawau, said the AEIOU Challenge was about inculcating in children the culture of saving, being prudent in spending and making smart financial decisions. It was organised by Alliance Bank Malaysia Berhad for primary schools in the country, and Sabah schools also participated.

"Very well done. Concepts on financial management are taught and the pupils then apply and articulate their financial literacy in a creative way by drawing a comic strip 'Challenge' based on the theme 'Smart Financial Habits'," she said.
