Najib: I don't want 'yes men'

Selangor: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak insisted Sunday that he does not want only "yes men" in Umno but stressed that criticisms should be aired in the right manner and forum. In his speech at the Hulu Selangor Umno divisional meeting here, the party president said members must pick the right time and place to air their grievances against the leadership.

"I do not want yes men...but there is a place and space if you want to say no," he said.

"Be more like the opposition, defend your leader... this is what I call collective responsibility," he added.

On Saturday, Umno Vice-President Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal warned that the party will face destruction if its members fear to speak the truth and choose only to be "yes men" to ensure their own political survival.

In an apparent swipe at Najib who earlier this week removed his detractors from the Government, Shafie, who was also axed from the Cabinet, also suggested that Umno steered off course in its fight to elevate the economic status of the Malays.

Shafie and former Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin were among the most notable Umno casualties in Najib's Cabinet reshuffle announced on Tuesday.

Najib has said it was one of the toughest decisions he had to make but insisted that it was the right move as he needed a "united" Cabinet behind him.

Both Shafie and Muhyiddin have been critical of Najib's continued silence on the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) financial fiasco.

Their critical remarks have caused them their places in the Cabinet, with Muhyiddin losing his position as the Deputy Prime Minister. Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was appointed to replace Muhyiddin.

Meanwhile, Najib said Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) still have time to regain public confidence as the next federal polls would not be held "tomorrow".

The leader's remarks appeared to be a pointed message to his former deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who had reportedly warned last weekend that the ruling party could lose Putrajaya if elections were to be held soon and controversies like the 1MDB scandal remained unresolved.

"Someone said we will lose in the elections if they are held tomorrow. Who said elections will be held tomorrow?" Najib asked.

"We still have time to gain back public confidence," he added. The Prime Minister's remarks echoed that of another Umno leader who made the same comment earlier this week when responding to Muhyiddin's warning.

The leader Deputy Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan had said that there was no way of predicting BN's performance in the next federal polls as the election was not "tomorrow".

"If someone were to ask me 'If there were elections tomorrow, will Barisan Nasional be able to win?' I will answer tomorrow isn't election day. Tomorrow is the preparation for elections.

"So if there are leaders saying that if there is an election tomorrow Barisan Nasional will lose? I have a different opinion, tomorrow there isn't an election," he had said on Wednesday, referring to previous news reports citing Muhyiddin's speech to Cheras Umno delegates over the weekend.

Earlier Sunday, however, Muhyiddin had scoffed at Ahmad's assertion, even saying that it could become an "international joke".
