Balung YB Syed Abas takes over as Speaker

Kota Kinabalu: Balung assemblyman Datuk Syed Abas Syed Ali has been appointed as Sabah state legislative assembly speaker. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman when announcing, said he was expected to assume the post starting this Friday.

Syed Abas, 68, takes over as the ninth speaker of the assembly from Datuk Seri Salleh Tun Said Keruak, who was appointed as the Communications and Multimedia Minister following the recent Federal cabinet reshuffling.

"He has vast experience in politics and government and has held key positions in government agencies and government linked companies (GLCs)," said Musa.

Born on October 12, 1947, Syed Abas holds a Bachelor's Degree (Science) in Applied Economics from East London University and is chairman to the State's government's investment arm company, Warisan Harta Sabah Sdn Bhd.

He was elected as Balung assemblyman in 1978 till 1981 under the Berjaya administration and made a return in 2004 winning the Balung seat for Barisan Nasional.
