Tuaran: The District Council is seeking a funding of RM100 million to embark on an ambitious plan which will also see a dead river behind the marketplace here being brought back to life. "The district office through the district council had applied for an allocation to bear the costs for cleaning up the river and to upgrade the tamu ground by relocating it to a new site," said its Chairman Abdul Mohd Ibnu Abdul Kadir Baba.

"We decided to take the opportunity to revive the dead river to attract more tourists to visit Tuaran district. We even plan to build a jogging track around the dead river and beautify the landscape," he added.

He said they estimated it to worth about RM100 million and they hoped the government would be able to assist them in beautifying the district.

According to him, the idea was initiated last year and had identified the areas that needed to be developed which included reviving the dead river.

Abdul who is also the District Officer said this during the launching of an environmental project by SM St John, Tuaran's 'Adiuvare Invicem' group.

So far, he said they had sent petitions to the Department of Drainage and Irrigation as well as the Department of Environment for the approval to rehabilitate the river.

"We do not want to affect the environment especially the river when we start the cleaning up process," he said, adding that they also required the approval from the Land and Survey Department to get the land in the surrounding areas.

"There are still several other processes we need to undergo and at the moment we are still in the early stage," he added.

Abdul said it an integrated development as they also planned to increase parking lots by 500-1, 000, develop a recreational area as well as to solve issues concerning public transport.

The environmental project was part of the Petronas All About Youth (AAY) Community Social Responsibility (CSR) competition to nurture talents and leadership skills among students.

The participating schools from Sabah are SM Maktab Sabah, SMK (A) Kota Kinabalu, SMK All Saints, SMK La Salle Tanjung Aru, SMK Lok Yuk Likas, SMK St Francis Convent, SMK Stella Maris, SMK (A) Tun Ahmadshah, SMK Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu, SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin, SMK Tansau, SMK St Michael, SMK Tamparuli, SMK St John and SMK Badin.

The students, from schools in Kota Kinabalu, Penampang and Tuaran, are part of the 1,800 students from 90 schools in six states included in this year's Petronas AAY.

The winning school will represent Sabah in the Petronas AAY grand finale in Kuala Lumpur and compete against finalists from five other states namely Johor, Kelantan, Melaka, Terengganu and Sarawak.

Third prize winners will receive cash prize worth RM800 and prizes for each student.

SMK St. John Super Principal Dr. Ngiam Eng Hong said the programme will be a continuous one as it is part of the students' school syllabus.
