Kuala Lumpur: The International Olympic Council (IOC) will act with zero tolerance on the doping allegations carried in a documentary aired by German broadcaster ARD if there were cases involving athletics results at the Olympic Games.IOC president Thomas Bach said that they would wait for the inquiry by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) before taking any action regarding the issues.

"At this time, we have nothing more than allegations and we have to respect the presumption of innocence for the athletes. We are looking forward to receiving the report by Wada.

"I had a conversation with Wada president (Sir Craig Reedie) this morning. We made it very clear and we agreed that Wada is the competent centre for the fight against doping," he told a press conference after closing the 128th IOC Session at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here Monday.

Recently, ARD and the Sunday Times newspaper of Britain alleged that up to a third of medals involving endurance events at world athletics championships and the Olympics from 2001 to 2012 were won by competitors who have given suspicious samples for doping tests.

Meanwhile, regarding the preparations by Rio de Janeiro, the host city for the 2016 Olympic Games, Bach noted that the IOC would continue to monitor the issue of water pollution until the Games were concluded.

He said the Brazilian authorities have done water tests according to the guidelines set by the World Health Organisations (WHO).

"They have the assurance from WHO that there is no significant risk for the athletes but of course we will continue to monitor these until the conclusion of the Olympic competition," he added.

It was reported that the hosts were facing serious challenges over cleaning up the bay where the sailing competitions would be held.

Sailors in Guanabara Bay had reported worrying amounts of rubbish and pollution, including discarded furniture and floating animal carcasses.

Rio de Janeiro was announced as the hosts at the 121st IOC Session held in Copenhagen on Oct 2, 2009. – Bernama
