Kota Kinabalu: In its continuing effort to ensure its students keep an open mind to the vast cultures of the world SM All Saints again organised the Global Generation Programme this year. The programme was originally initiated by the Institute for Tropical Biology and Conservation of Universiti Malaysia Sabah in 2005 before the school officially launched a memorandum of understanding with Arima Senior High School, Sanda City, Hyogo in 2007.

The school has now successfully organised the programme every other year.

Its principal, Tiong Ai Ping said the programme was aimed at providing opportunities for international linkage so that young Malaysians can widen their views.

"One of the objectives is to expose our students to cultures in other parts of the world and to understand their ways of life.

"The other objective is to form strong bonds with fellow students of different cultures in order to have international integration and everlasting friendship."

This year's programme involved four students from Arima Senior High School accompanied by their vice-principal, Mitsunobu Nakaue and an English teacher, Masami Kuroda.

The Japanese students were assigned to stay with foster families of five students from SM All Saints who will themselves be travelling to Japan in November with two accompanying teachers.

In turn, the five local students will stay with the Japanese students from the programme during their stay while the teachers will stay at the school.

Tiong added that Arima Senior High School also made a collection for the recent earthquake victims in Ranau raising 20,000 Japanese Yen which is equivalent to RM540.

She added that while the students from her school were travelling under their own expenses, the accompanying teachers' flight expenses and allowances were sponsored by the school's Parent Teachers Association.

Ryuki Sakashita, 16, said his stay has been very good so far and that he got a book on Malaysia to prepare for his trip over while Rei Daikoku, 17, said she and the others used the Internet to search about Malaysia.

Their accompanying English teach, Masami Kuroda, in the meantime said in preparation for the trip she gave the students lessons on Malaysia as well as Japanese culture to introduce to the Malaysian students.

Meanwhile, SM All Saints' student, Adelaide Lim, 15, said part of their trip to Japan in November would include a cultural performance.

"We are actually preparing for a performance because we have to do it there (but we) haven't started (yet) because we still have PT3," she said, adding that they will only begin rehearsing after their examination in October.

Daniel Timothy, on the other hand, said they were all required to do a personal and group presentation next year, telling of their experience in Japan.
