Labuan pirate cabs crackdown

Labuan: Police cracked down on pirate taxis, near the Sun Mini Mart area Monday, booking seven operators under Ops Kereta Sapu.Taxi drivers praised the action and called on the police to be relentless in weeding out the illegal taxis. Those interviewed refused to be named.Under the law set by the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board, the taxis have to undergo road worthiness inspection twice a year by Puspakom. Their vehicle must also be equipped with a fire extinguisher and cover first party insurance for the passengers.

As such their spokesman said safety of the passengers is a top priority."We have to spend at least RM1,500 for insurance, Puspakom, serviceable fire extinguisher and taxi permit," he said. He claimed that the fares charged by the taxi and the illegal operators were more or less the same.OCPD Supt Adzhar Othman said the operation would continue any time of the day and night.Meanwhile, police conducted road blocks from 1am to 4am to book traffic violators, especially illegal racing and drink driving. 34 summonses were issued, with one found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

A total of 57 drivers had been charged under section 45A Road Transport Act forbeing positive of alcohol in their blood above the Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

Under section 45A Road Transport Act 1987, the penalty is fine between RM1,000 to RM6,000 or jail not more than 12 months for first time offenders.

A total of 65 vehicles were stopped during the operation, with 69 men and five women screened. Their licences and road tax were verified using a mobile device.
