Kota Kinabalu: Twenty five passengers almost drowned when the speedboat they were travelling in sank off Pulau Papan, near here. Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) confirmed the incident, adding the agency received a distress call at 2.10pm. "The boat carrying 25 passengers and three crew members was heading towards Labuan from Sipitang when the boat was suddenly flooded," said the spokesperson.

It was learnt that all passengers were rescued and taken to a jetty near the Labuan Mariner Hotel.

The boat sprang a leak in mid-sea.

Another passenger boat, which was travelling there, assisted the passsengers after receiving a distress call via the boat radio at about 2pm on Tuesday.

A team comprising the Fire and Rescue Department, marine police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency arrived minutes later and sent the passengers to Labuan.

Labuan Fire and Rescue operations chief Roslizan Yahya said the passengers were not injured as the boat had a backup system that kept it afloat for a longer period of time during emergencies.

"The local passengers, including children and adults were sent to Sipitang in separate vessels that arrived to provide assistance," he said.

They all arrived their destination at about 3pm, less than half an hour later than the usual time.
