Kota Kinabalu: The on-going dusk to dawn curfew in the waters off the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone), which expires today, has been extended until Aug 21. The curfew restricts sea activities in the six districts under Esszone in the East Coast of Sabah, namely Sandakan, Kinabatangan, Lahad Datu, Kunak and Tawau, stretching three nautical miles from the coast.

State Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said the curfew's extension from 7pm on Aug 6 was made after considering the current security situation in the area.

"After taking into account the security situation in the areas involved, with the power vested in the Home Minister and me under Section 31(4) of the Police Act 1967, we decided to extend the curfew beginning Aug 6 at 7pm till Aug 21 at 7pm.

"The extension was necessary to ensure the safety and security of the people along the coast and tourists in the Esszone from threats of intruders who are 'still lurking close' to commit cross-border crimes like kidnapping and armed robbery.

"Another reason is to facilitate security surveillance and to tackle trespassing and smuggling of humans, drugs and weapons in the areas," he said here Tuesday.

Jalaluddin said the curfew also received support from the chalet operators and fishermen in ensuring security in the waters including in islands at the border.

He said all district police chiefs in the six districts have been authorised to issue permits to those who apply for fishing activities or those who need to pass through the waters of the Esszone areas.

The curfew was introduced from 6pm to 6am on July 16 last year following a spate of kidnappings in the east coast of Sabah.
